Rob McElhenney hired actress Kaitlin Olson to play the role of "Dee" in the first season of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and the pair subsequently became romantically involved. In 2008, the pair were married in California, and they have two sons together. Rob has described his wife as "the funniest woman in show business."

In November 2020, Rob McElhenney and Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds purchased the Wrexham Welsh football team after forming a business partnership and receiving the backing of the Wrexham Supporters Trust. They put no money down but did agree to front roughly $2.6 million in infrastructure improvements. In April 2023, Wrexham was promoted to League Two and became National League champions.
