Early Life and Career Beginnings

Christine Flores, better known as Christina Milian, was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on September 26, 1981. Her parents, Don Flores and Carmen Milian, raised her in Waldorf, Maryland, along with her two younger sisters. Milian gets part of her stage name from her mother's maiden name; she changed her name in the hopes of landing a broader range of roles and opportunities. By as early as age nine, Milian was auditioning and landing roles for things like Wendy's commercials. When she was thirteen, her mother took her and her sisters and moved to Los Angeles, leaving her father in Maryland. Her parents divorced soon after.

In Los Angeles, Milian's dream was to become an actress. She managed to land some jobs, such as being a host for the series "Movie Surfers" on the Disney Channel, but after meeting producer Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins because they lived in the same apartment complex, she began spending more time recording music and meeting people in the recording industry.

Music Career

Milian's first ever professional music appearance was on the song "Between Me and You" on rapper Ja Rule's album "Rule 3:36" (2000). The song peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. She went on to co-write songs for the likes of Jennifer Lopez and PYT, and through her collaboration with Ja Rule, she landed a record deal with Def Soul Records. Her label took her to Sweden, where she recorded her self-titled debut album, which was released in October 2001 in the UK. The album's American release had been postponed due to the September 11 attacks, and through several delays ultimately not released at all. She subsequently worked on various projects, including the theme song for the Disney Channel animated series "Kim Possible," as well as collaborations with Romeo and Hilary Duff. She returned to the studio with producers like Bloodshy & Avant, Cory Rooney, and Warryn Campbell, and the end project of their efforts, her second studio album, "It's About Time," was released in July 2004. In particular, the album's lead single, "Dip It Low," became a huge hit, peaking at No. 2 in the UK and No. 5 in the US. The album was also nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album in 2005. Her third album, "So Amazin'", was released in 2006.

Acting Career

Although she is widely known for her music career, Milian's original dream when she moved to California as a teen was to become an actress. But her first major starring role was in the 2003 film "Love Don't Cost a Thing," opposite ex-boyfriend Nick Cannon. She has since gone on to appear in films like "Torque" (2004); "Man of the House" (2005); "Be Cool" (2005), alongside John Travolta and Uma Thurman; the horror film "Pulse" (2006) with Kristen Bell and Ian Somerhalder; the television movie "Snowglobe" (2007); "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" (2009) with Matthew McConaughey; "Bring It On: Fight to the Finish" (2009), which was released direct-to-DVD; "Christmas Cupid" (2010); "Baggage Claim" (2013); "Memories of Christmas" (2018); and the Netflix film "Falling Inn Love" (2019), the first Netflix movie to be filmed entirely in New Zealand. Additionally, Milian has appeared in two video games: Def Jam Vendetta (2003) and "Need for Speed: Undercover" (2008).

Entrepreneurship and Other Projects

In addition to being an artist herself, Milian has also moved into the world of artist management when, in 2010, she signed on to be the manager of the Australian music duo Kasey Osborne and Kelsey-Maree. Her other ventures include the brand Viva Diva Wines, which she co-owns with her mother/manager, Carmen Milian, and publicist Robyn Santiago. She also co-owns the beignet food truck Beignet Box with Elizabeth Morris. In 2013, Milian was a contestant on the 17th season of the competition show "Dancing with the Stars," finishing in ninth place with her professional dance partner Mark Ballas.
